The Grupo Palo Alto is the leading center in the practice and promotion of the Problem-Solving Brief Therapy as originated at the Brief Therapy Center, Mental Research Institute (MRI) of Palo Alto.
The staff of Grupo Palo Alto offers training and therapy nationally and internationally. The therapuetic model is focused on problem formation and problem resolution in an interaction which occurs in a context. The model practiced by its professionals is the "original" brief therapy developed in 1966 by Dr. Richard Fisch. The initial team members included Paul Watzlawick, John Weakland and Arthur Bodin.
Grupo Palo Alto is an international network that seeks to promote further applications of problem-solving to new cultures and different environments in which systemic thinking can be applied. To this end the Grupo Palo Alto network has been active for the last 4 years and continues to expand, with current satellite branches in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Spain. The goal of this organization is to exchange information among centers, participate in each others trainings, projects, research and, eventually, some conjoint publications. We also encourage the exchange of students, especially from Spanish-speaking countries who are interested in learning from an experienced therapist who worked with the masters in Palo Alto.
A more recent development for Grupo Palo Alto is a strong alliance with the Family Therapy and psychotherapy unit of the San Pau Hospital, Barcelona, associated with the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and Dr. Juan Luis Linares, Profesor of psychiatry, Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Director of the Family Therapy unit at the Hospital de la Sta. Creu y San Pau.
